According to a report by the Evening Gazette, 92 per cent of schools in the north-east borough took part in the national Eco Schools scheme to highlight the importance of the environment, topping a table of 158 areas across the country.
It added that Normanby Primary School used its allocated grant to create a vegetable patch and wildlife area, gaining the Green Flag award in February.
Speaking to the newspaper, executive director of Groundwork South Tees, Chris Watson, praised the efforts of the schools and their bond with the community.
He said: "The Redcar and Cleveland Eco Schools programme is held in such high national regard due to its active partnership between schools and partner agencies."
Groundwork South Tees is an environmental regeneration charity operating from Middlesbrough and Saltburn-by-the-Sea and was established in 2000 to address sustainability in the area south of the River Tees.
