Vocationally related qualifications

Vocationally related qualifications (VRQs) serve a range of purposes in different sectors and at different levels, and consequently vary in terms of size, level and assessments.

VRQs generally provide the knowledge and practical skills required for particular job roles through a structured learning programme – usually delivered off-site. As such, they provide a learning pathway for those not yet in employment or who prefer a more traditional study-based training programme. VRQs are particularly suited to less confident learners who may benefit from the support offered by mediated learning experiences and tutor guidance.

Although VRQs are closely related to occupational roles and include some work-based experience, they are usually assessed by assignments, projects and sometimes short written tests. The assessments will often relate to activities carried out during work-based practice and may include an element of assessment in the workplace.
