Training and developing support staff

Support staff training and development must be effective and make best use of resources. As staff will be at different stages in their careers, it is important to carry out a training needs analysis to identify areas of development.

The national occupational standards for supporting teaching and learning in schools (STL NOS) can be used as the basis of a training needs analysis. The standards provide objective measures against which to judge existing skills and knowledge and help identify where there may be development needs.

Once you have identified areas of development there are a number of options including support work in schools qualifications. You can use the career development framework to easily identify appropriate training and routes of progression for your support staff.
