CPD leadership

Continuing professional development (CPD) has a key role to play in raising standards by helping to improve teaching and learning.

Ofsted published a report on CPD in 2006 titled The Logical Chain. This highlighted the importance of CPD leadership in schools.

CPD leaders

The role of CPD leader combines coordination, staff development and leadership responsibilities, and increasingly involves working with the whole school workforce.

CPD leaders should also keep abreast of relevant policy changes and new initiatives, including the revised performance management arrangements and the new professional standards for teachers.

Supporting CPD leadership

The TDA is engaged in a range of strategies to support and develop CPD leadership in schools.

Between January and June 2007, we worked with a number of local authorities (LAs) across the country to explore what support – both local and national – already exists for CPD leaders in schools. One outcome of this was a report that summarised the project’s findings and put forward recommendations for the next phase of the project. You can download the report from this page.

From June 2007 we have continued to work with LAs across the country to develop and enhance their support for CPD leadership.

Resources for CPD leadership

We have developed more comprehensive web support for CPD leaders, which includes a directory of resources, guidance and case studies.

We have also conducted national research into the responsibilities of CPD leaders and the challenges and barriers to effective CPD leadership. The report examines the individual roles and responsibilities of CPD leaders, their experiences in leading CPD and the support they receive, or would like to receive. In addition, the report explores links between CPD leaders’ work and other key areas in schools – for example, performance management and school improvement succession plans. The report is available to download from this page.
