The career entry and development profile (CEDP) is primarily an online resource and is aimed at trainee and newly qualified teachers (NQTs). It will encourage NQTs to focus on achievements and goals early on, and discuss their professional development needs. This page provides information on the CEDP, including templates NQTs can download to record their progress.
How is the CEDP structured?
The CEDP is in three transition points. Transition point one is towards the end of initial teacher training (ITT), point two is at the beginning of induction, and point three is towards the end of induction. There are guidance notes at each transition point, a set of prompt questions and sample formats that can be selected or adapted for making notes. There are also resources to help NQTs set objectives and write induction action plans.
Who should use it?
Primarily the NQT – by answering the questions in the profile, in partnership with their tutors and induction tutor.
For example, the statutory induction arrangements say that an NQT should be observed within the first four weeks of their induction period, then at six to eight week intervals. This will provide valuable feedback on their progress, and help them identify their achievements and development needs.
The CEDP is designed to help teachers make the transition from ITT to their first teaching post. It supports the national statutory induction arrangements that are compulsory for all NQTs.
Who else will it help?
The CEDP is also useful to those supporting NQTs. It helps ITT providers prepare NQTs for an active role in their induction period and supports discussion between the NQT and their induction tutor. It helps schools understand an NQT’s strengths and experiences at the end of ITT and helps them make connections between an NQT’s induction, professional development and performance management. This will help the school support new teachers as their career progresses. Specific guidance is available for ITT providers and school induction tutors.
The requirements for ITT state that ITT providers must ensure trainee teachers receive, and are supported in completing, their CEDP. NQTs must also be informed of statutory induction arrangements, and how to prepare for their induction period.
In the future, NQTs may also wish to get involved in initial training and induction within their school. Many teachers find that passing on what they have learned, for example as a school-based ITT tutor or induction tutor, is one of the most effective professional development activities of all.
Professional development records
NQTs may wish to continue using a professional development record. For example, their school may have introduced them to a portfolio system or they may wish to continue with another method.
