Induction and initial training

A national programme of training and support has been set up to give parent support advisers the knowledge and skills they need to do their job effectively.

The TDA has developed an induction and initial training programme consisting of three elements that support broader continuing professional development (CPD) including an accredited parent support adviser (PSA) vocational qualification.

PSA training and support model: initial training of PSAs
Element 1 Element 2 Element 3 Broader CPD and support: includes access to accredited awards
Induction to organisation and setting Children’s workforce generic induction and initial training PSA role-specific induction and initial training

Induction and initial training will generally be undertaken in the first two months.

Induction and initial training

  • Element 1: Induction to organisation and local area setting, host school and education system (providing a context for elements 2 and 3)
  • Element 2: Extended induction training, using materials generic to all children’s workforce practitioners, developed by the Children’s Workforce Development Council. The training materials are designed to be delivered either in role-specific groups or in a multi-agency context, thus supporting integrated working and shared understanding
  • Element 3: Initial training designed specifically for PSAs. The training has been developed by the TDA and has been mapped against the support work in schools (parent support) qualification to ensure consistency with its requirements
