Under the revised arrangements for performance management, schools and local authorities have an opportunity to ensure that all teachers and headteachers are empowered and confident to engage fully with performance management to develop their skills and careers.
This includes better planning at the start of the cycle and greater transparency, consistency and fairness in assessments at the end of the cycle. It also provides improved access to continuing professional development and other support that teachers need to carry out their jobs effectively.
The revised professional standards for teachers set out what is expected of teachers throughout their careers. These provide a backdrop to performance management discussions.
